2. FUNDAMENTAL READING SKILLS
What is the quickest way of knowing about the content of a book?
Have a general idea from its title and contents page.
Look for specific information, for example look at the contents page and find out the number of units and chapters it is divided into, and the topic of each unit and chapter.
Quest is the main book you will use in this course. Find the following
(a) General Idea
(b) Specific information: Units, unit names, chapters, chapter names
(c) Quest book: Chaper 1 title - discuss


4. DIGITAL LITERACY - Website creation
(a) Open your browser
(b) go to Wikispaces.com
(c) Go to the end of the page and click on PRICING
(d) Click on BASIC: FREE
(e) Add Username
(f) Add Password
(g) Add your Email
(h) Join Now
(i) Follow the instructions and create your own wiki website.
(j) IMPORTANT: Write down in your exercise book: Your Username, password and address of your new website so you can find it again and can sign in and out to add material.
(k) Email me your wiki site address

Look at the common mistakes. Discuss and correct them.
Share your findings with the rest of the class.

  • Avoid translation word by word
  • Check meaning of words, they may mean differently in different languages
  • Check particular cultural differences
  • Check meaning of symbols in the other culture
  • Making Inferences (guess from the general meaning of a paragraph or a sentence)

7. MORE WIKI WORK - homework
Add another page.
  • Click on "edit navigation" at the end of the menu bar on the left.
  • Below Home, add another page. Type 'Personal'. Highlight it. Click on the icon 'Link' on the top menu bar. Click on 'add link' . Click on 'save'. You will see 'Personal' below 'Home' on the menu bar on the left.
  • Click on 'Personal'. Click on edit. Type your Personal Profile. Click on 'Save'.
  • Add your photo in 'Personal'. Click on the icon 'File' on the top menu bar. Click on '+Upload file'. Browse in your computer and find your photo. Click on it. Once it has been loaded, click on it. The photo will appear in the wiki page entitled 'Personal'. Save.
  • In the same way, you can upload a video (YouTube clip).
Invite me to your wiki.
  • Go to 'Manage Wiki' at the top left menu bar. Go to 'People' and click on 'Invite People'. In the 'Send To' box, write my email (salomi.papadima@cut.ac.cy) and then click 'send'. In this way, you are inviting me to your wiki.
  • Next time you visit your wiki, you will see a message in a yellow bar saying something along the lines of " One user has requested membership in this wiki. Click here to approve or reject". Click on "Click here to approve or reject". Go to 'Pending Membership Requests'. Tick the square next to my name, then on top of it, click on 'Approve'. Thank you for inviting me to join your Wiki.
